Visiting Southern Michigan
Spring and summer see the people of southern Michigan heading outdoors to celebrate the warmer weather. This season, outdoor activities abound, and communities from Kalamazoo and Battle Creek to the Detroit suburbs of Livonia and Woodhaven host more special events, festivals, and family-friendly fun than any other time of year.
It’s time to find a sense of southern Michigan’s personality by exploring its lush landscape, and the communities embedded within, on a scenic driving tour. All kinds of one-of-a-kind attractions await in every direction and towns like Coldwater make great day trip destinations.
Soak up some suds this spring in Kalamazoo on May 21st, when Homer Styrker Field hosts the 2016 American On Tap event. More than 100 beverages from some of the best local, regional, and national brewers will be available for samples, along with their perfect food pairings, all while live music, vendors, and other entertainment maintains a festive atmosphere. Pours start at 2 p.m.
One of Michigan's finest zoos, the Binder Park Zoo in nearby Battle Creek, invites families to be a part of the 2016 Leila Arboretum's Fantasy Forest Art Carve. Held June 18th, the even features a variety of hands-on, educational activities and demonstrations, not to mention the Lemur Lap Kids Run. Register now to make sure your family gets a spot.
To the far west, on the shores of Lake Michigan, Saugatuck knows how to party. Get in on the celebration on August 28th, when the 2016 Taste of Saugatuck sees area eateries opening up with special deals, discounts, and events. Things get cooking at noon and tickets are required for entry.
Visitors to the Detroit-area communities of Hartland, Whitmore Lake, Livonia, and Woodhaven enjoy quick access to the Motor City, and for sports fans, that means quick access to Detroit Tigers baseball. The Tigers round the bases at Tiger Stadium, in downtown Detroit, through the first week of October. Check the schedule during your visit to find out when you can spend a day at the ballpark enjoying America’s Pastime.
