Great Lakes Zoological Society

Open daily in Ann Arbor; the Great Lakes Zoological Society operates from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. just south of Whitmore Lake. Set in the western Detroit metropolitan area, the zoo is a 5000-square-foot exhibit – plus the World of Discovery gift shop.

Nichols Arboretum

There's more to the University of Michigan than football. Visit the campus of the state's oldest university, to see the wonderfully lush 123-acre Nichols Arboretum. "The Arb," established in 1907 by O. C. Simonds, is located on Central Campus, along the Huron River.

The Arboretum features many collections, including the Peony Garden, Gateway Garden, the Centennial Shrub Collection, Heathdale, the Wetlands and the Dow Prairie. Enter the Arboretum via one of its three entrances, to begin your exploration of this beautiful area.

The Uplands features an oak-hickory forest with trees up to 135 years old. Enjoy strolling along the natural trails and pathways and be sure to visit the James D. Reader Jr. Urban Environmental Education Center. Many students enjoy studying, picnicking and playing frisbee on the Arboretum grounds. While in the Detroit area, be sure to include a visit to this wonderful part of campus.

The University of Michigan was established in 1817, making it the oldest university in Michigan. This public research university is home to the University of Michigan Law School, founded in 1859.

This top-ranked public law school maintains and administers the collection of books in the University of Michigan Law School Library.

The initial library collection was housed in the "old" Law Building until the collection expanded requiring additional space. For forty years, Professor Hobart Coffey administered the library collection.

By the late 70s and early 80s, the library expanded with the Allan F. and Alene Smith addition. This additional 77,000 square feet of space provided room for shelving the 475,000 books, added the Jackie Rare Book Room and 482 seats.

During your Southern Michigan travels, stop by the University of Michigan campus to tour the library. Enjoy the short drive north to Whitmore Lake.
