Beautiful MI Beach

Top 10 Michigan Beaches

Given Michigan is surrounded by water on three sides, it’s no surprise the Great Lakes State is home to some of the country’s – and certainly the Midwest’s – most pristine beaches.

So plan your trip to the Great Lakes coastal cities this summer, and check out our list of the top 10 Michigan beaches:

1. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

We’ll get the big name out of the way early – Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is an iconic beach beauty, set just a short drive from the northern MI community of Beulah.

Nestled alongside Lake Michigan, Sleeping Bear features a handful of sandy beaches across its 35 miles of shoreline, ideal for swimming, sandcastles, sunshine, and, really, some of the best scenery and sweeping views you’ll find in the state.

2. Grand Haven State Park

Just south of Sleeping Bear, the city of Grand Haven invites beach goers to bask in the beauty of Grand Haven State Park, a 50-acre lakeside park with seemingly endless beach fun and recreational opportunity.

Sleeping Bear Overlook

Even better, get a good look at the Grand Haven Pier and Lighthouses stretching out from the sand, and don’t forget to check out the “world’s largest musical fountain,” found nearby.

3. Empire State Park

Over in the Cherry Capital of the World, check out Bryant Park just off of Front Street, and enjoy a dip in Grand Traverse Bay.

Traverse City is known for its bayside fun and beach recreation, so really, the fun doesn’t stop at Bryant Park; there’s a reason why it’s been referred to as one of America’s better, lesser-known beach towns.

4. Oval Beach

Back on the coast of Lake Michigan, Saugatuck and Holland visitors would be remiss not spending an afternoon (or longer) at Oval Beach, home to sandy beaches bordered by green grass as far as the eye can see.

Oval Beach has previously been listed as one of the country’s best shorelines and top beaches. Oh, and it’s great for swimming, sunbathing, picnics, and really anything you could think of.

5. Ludington State Park

Featuring about 5,300 acres of central Michigan beauty, Ludington State Park is known for a lot more than its beaches, but lets be honest, the beaches are pretty great.

Grand Haven Beach

If you’re visiting Ludington, you’ll find Ludington State Park and Hamlin Lake Beach just a quick three-mile drive from downtown, where an abundance of outdoor recreation and sight seeing await.

6. Kiwanis Beach

All the way in northern Michigan – where the mainland ends and the Upper Peninsula begins – Kiwanis Beach in St. Ignace offers a cozy respite for Michigan beach seekers.

While the beach itself isn’t quite the most mesmerizing, it does offer swimmers some pretty unmistakable views of the Mackinaw Bridge, and it can serve as a great staging area for a kayak journey to Mackinaw City

7. Silver Beach

Over in St. Joseph, just a short drive from Benton Harbor, Silver Beach County Park is one of the larger beaches on our list, featuring everything from concessions, to volleyball, to a children’s playground.

Traveling with you four-legged friend in tow? Great, Silver Beach is known as being extremely pet friendly, also yielding quick access to South Pier and the St. Joseph Riverfront.

8. Harbor Springs

Endless Beach Fun in MI

Just a short drive from Harbor Springs, Petoskey State Park offers up over 300 acres of scenic shoreline, nestled neatly along Little Traverse Bay.

The sandy beach stretches out for about a mile, creating a spacious, fun-filled environment, also featuring a playground, hiking trails, picnic areas, and the famous Petoskey stone.

9. Lakeside Park

Port Huron isn’t shy of beachfront fun either – head to Lakeside Park any time of year for over 1,000 feet of sandy beach, playground facilities, beach volleyball, and tons of boating in the summer.

10. Cheboygan State Park

Swim in the Straits of Mackinac this summer – Cheboygan State Park is set just a few miles outside of Cheboygan, offering over seven miles of shoreline and ample amenities.

When you’re not swimming and boating in Lake Huron, keep your eyes peeled for the Cheboygan Point Light, take a walk along nearby Elliot Creek, and check out nearby Cheboygan Brewing Company.
