Visiting Central Michigan
Across central Michigan this summer, you’ll find an undeniable selection of premier attractions to visit, cities and towns to explore, and a wealth of welcoming and warm locals. From Grand Haven along the Lake Michigan shore, to Port Huron, make the most of your summertime stay in central Michigan.
If your visit to central Michigan is right in the dead heat of summer, or later as it yields to fall, you’ll find a wide range of excellent outdoor recreation to try. Saugatuck Dunes State Park can yield a full day of moderate hikes, bird watching, and more, while the Riverside Park near Grand Haven – along the Grand River – is ideal for fishing and boating.
Do plan for some time spent exploring Grand Haven this summer. Don’t miss the annual Salmon Festival, one of Grand Haven’s most exceptional events. On September 16th and 17th, stroll through downtown Grand Haven waterfront, a short drive away from Holland, and mark the end of summer by celebrating the fall harvest season – and the salmon migration, of course. It’s the 13th year for the Salmon Festival. Check out the Sons of the American Legion Fish Boil, the Salmon Run 5K/10K, or the Michigan Microbrew Tasting Event.
Travels across central Michigan should also include a stay in Grand Rapids. One of the largest cities across the region, Grand Rapids is home to two of the state’s most sterling attractions: the John Ball Zoo, and the Gerald R. Ford Museum. Summer is a great time to take the family out for a zoo day, and if you’re here during late September, don’t miss the 2016 Grand Rapids Heart Walk. Make your way to Metro Health Village in nearby Wyoming on September 24th for this public health awareness event.
Mark your calendar for October 16th – head for the Van Andrel Arena in Grand Rapids for the 2016 Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions. See members of the 2012 and 2016 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics squads perform stunning routines – it all starts at 6 p.m.
When your trek through central Michigan has you in Lapeer, be sure to see one of the most anticipated concerts this fall – head for the Palace of Auburn Hills, just a short drive south from Lapeer, on September 6th and 7th to see Adele perform.
Closer to Saginaw, you’ll find Birch Run and Midland – two cities which yield easy access to the nearby Dow Event Center. Head there on October 17th for a live performance from popular American rapper Tech N9ne.
